The Purge (2013) – If you’re planning to see it, don’t read this!

Has anyone seen this film yet? I saw a trailer for it (watch the trailer here) and I couldn’t wait to see it.. but now I have, I must admit me and my boyfriend were both pretty disappointed.

Knowing that it was made by the same people who gave us paranormal activity and sinister (which is shut away in a draw and is never coming out for fear it could come true if the box is in eye shot) I think I had it in my head that it was gonna be pretty awesome, and super scary.
I’ll admit that I was a bit scared but I think that was because of the tension that was created throughout the film, not due to scary scenes – so if you prefer tension to real horror I guess it’s a good thing.

One of the things that make a good (or bad, however you want to see it) horror for me is the storyline. If the storyline is believable and well thought out I think it has a lot more effect than a film with things that you know would never ever ever happen. That’s why I love zombie stuff so much – it could really happen, and it will.

But the circumstances in The Purge would never happen.
First of all, the government would NEVER make crime legal – and I think if they even considered it someone with a greater authority would shoot it down. Either that or there’d be a revolt and these people would be ‘dealt with’.
Secondly, why the hell would you give your weirdo son the code for the security shutters? He doesn’t need to know. I also don’t understand why the room with the security cameras was left unattended – if that was me I’d sit there for 12 hours making sure no one tried to get in.
Thirdly, why did the girls boyfriend think that after killing her father she would still want to be with him?! WHAT THE HELL.
And finally, if you’re selling the security systems, surely you would make sure they were 100% impenetrable before installing them on your own house?!

I do have a few more issues with this film, but I worry I might ramble on a bit. Even though I was disappointed it was still an okay film. I think I’d built it up in my head to be more than I thought it would be – and I’m worried that I’ve done the same for World War Z! I’m still stoked to watch it though!
